Parker River Dental has always been a dental practice that focuses on comprehensive dental care. As I have stated in many of my blogs over the last few years “Your mouth is the key to your overall health” but COVID-19 has really inspired us to think on a larger scale. Research has shown that the healthier you are the better chance you have fighting COVID-19. Our society over the years has veered away from a healthy lifestyle to a more fast paced, high stress lifestyle that has increased peoples health problems.
The last time you saw your PCP did you discuss nutrition, exercise, BMI and how they affect your entire body and mental health? As a whole we need to start focusing on the root of a problem and not always think “isn't there a pill for that”. According to the CDC, in 2018 42.4% of all Americans are obese. That number has increased from 30.5% in the year 2000! Our society is getting increasingly sicker! People who are obese, compared to those with a healthy weight, are at an increase risk for many serious diseases and health conditions. Obesity is defined as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents risk to health. The body mass index (BMI) is a screening tool to help aid in identifying obesity. A BMI over 25 is considered overweight and a BMI over 30 is considered obese. Check out the BMI chart to find out your BMI!
COVID-19 has caused many people to fall out of their good habits of proper nutrition, working out, oral hygiene, and overall mental mindset. Although everyone's new favorite phrase is “in these uncertain times” the truth is that life is always uncertain; we really never know what life is going to bring each day. Thankfully, in the past, many of us were fortunate that our days went as planned and we had a routine or schedule, but COVID-19 has knocked us off our hamster wheels and what you do with this opportunity and new path is up to you. I would encourage you to start by taking back control of your life, and your daily habits. These are things you know you can control and with those good habits will come a more positive mindset and a happier and healthier you! “Don’t wish for it, work for it” - Autumn Calabrese
