Taking Care Of Mom

As some of you might already know, my family grew by two tiny feet three weeks ago as we welcomed our daughter into the world. I now have two beautiful children who I have so much love for. It’s true how you worry about how you will share your love between two children, but it magically happens and it’s amazing!

I decided to write my blog this week on the importance of taking care of mom. As mothers we always put our children and their needs first, we battle sleep deprivation and everything that goes on postpartum. Many women struggle to take care of themselves after having a baby as they learn to balance a new routine, especially when you have more than one child. I found for me there were a few simple things that made a difference in my day. It’s not always easy to get that 10 minutes to yourself but it’s important to try when you can. Take the time to shower and get out of your pajamas everyday, sometimes this may not happen till the end of the day, but it’s amazing how much more energized and positive your mindset can be. The other important thing to do daily is keep up with your oral hygiene routine. Yes, I know i’m a hygienist and of course i’m going to say that, but as busy, sleep deprived moms we tend to snack more and drink more coffee to keep our energy level up, all of which can increase your risk of gum disease and cavities. If you have an electric toothbrush or waterPik this goal is much more attainable as you can hold your newborn in one arm and use the other hand to brush and waterfloss. Good oral hygiene will also help keep bacteria levels down as you don’t want to share them with your baby through your saliva. I would also encourage lots of water drinking as hydrating your body actually gives you more energy, makes you feel better and causes you to snack less.

Like I said it’s not always easy to accomplish these daily tasks but it’s important for your overall mental and oral health to try and make the time for both. Finally, when possible try to get out and be active. If it’s nice outside, get out as often as possible. The sunshine and fresh air and change of scenery really can make a difference in your mood. I know this can be hard during the winter, but you can try walking around the mall. It is usually quiet during the week and it’s a great place to grab a coffee or tea and walk around.

If you have any tips that helped you as a new mom and you want to share, please feel free to share in the comments. :-)
